Conor lines out for Cork
Congratulations to our student Conor Holland, who lined out for the Cork hurling team at the Cumann na mBunscol - Munster GAA primary games match against Limerick on Saturday May 11th at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh. Conor scored a great point and was involved in lots of passages of play, including a great pass which lead to a wonderful goal for Cork. It was a great occasion for Conor and his family. We are very proud of Conor and his talent and we wish him well with his sporting future.
Cork County Mayor Frank O'Flynn visits our school
Last Friday, May 10th, our school was honoured to have Cork County Mayor Frank O'Flynn pay us a visit. Mayor O'Flynn was welcomed by Jason and Olan from our Student Council. Mayor O'Flynn spoke to the children, staff and members of our Board of Management and he was very happy to answer questions on his role, the path to becoming mayor and the value of his chain! A great morning was had and we thank him for taking time out of his busy day to visit us.
Soccer Tournament
Congratulations to team 'Spurs', the winners of our recent soccer tournament. They overcame 'Wolves' in a closely contested final, a great game to close our successful and very enjoyable tournament. Thanks to 4th, 5th and 6th classes for taking part and to Mr. Gibbons for organising it.
World Book Day
Book in a Box
All the children in fourth class made a Book in a Box for World Book Day. A Book in a Box is made by getting a book and making your favourite scene from your book. All the children in fourth class really enjoyed making a Book in a Box.There were lots of different scenes from books such as Under the Hawthorn Tree, Goldilocks and the Three Bears,Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Skuldugerry Pleasant. Ms Manley encouraged all of the children to let their imagination run wild and the fourth class would recommend a Book in a Box for everyone to let all of their imaginations be free.

St. Vincent de Paul
Our Student Council welcomed representatives from our local St. Vincent de Paul to our school in January. The Student Council presented them with a cheque for €1,489 from our fundraising activities which took place before Christmas. We are so proud of the children for all their efforts.
Happy New Year
We would like to wish all our students, parents, guardians and staff a very Happy New Year. We hope that the year ahead is full of happiness, health and peace.
Christmas Fundraising for the St. Vincent de Paul
In the run up to Christmas our Student Council wanted to organise a fundraiser to help those in need. A number of charities were put forward from the class council meetings, with St Vincent de Paul being mentioned in almost all. The Student Council took the decision to fundraise for our local St. Vincent de Paul in Fermoy. They held collections at the Infant Christmas Nativity and again that night at the Christmas Concert in our local church. The Student Council also held a very successful and enjoyable bake sale on Wednesday December 20th in our local community hall. The total raised for the St. Vincent de Paul was €1489.00. Well done to the Student Council and to all who donated money and baking. Your support is very much appreciated.

Introducing our first ever Student Council!
Elections for our new Student Council were held on Friday September 29th and we are delighted to introduce you to Scoil Mhuire's first Student Council.
The aim of the Student Council at primary level is to provide students with greater involvement in the decision making procedures of their school and to help them learn about how democracy works. Children are elected by secret ballot and are appointed as representatives for their class to the council for the duration of the school year. This year Scoil Mhuire has representatives from 3rd - 6th class on the council.
Student Councils generally meet several times each term. These meetings are facilitated by a teacher with council representatives collecting ideas and suggestions for the agenda from each class ahead of each meeting. Suggestions are then discussed, prioritised and are brought to the attention of the school’s principal and to staff meetings.
We look forward to seeing what ideas and suggestions our Student Council will have.
